The origins of the expression : ‘Above the Salt’

Traditionally, in medieval banquet halls, the family saler was a silver pot and placed in the middle of the table. Persons of distinction sat above the salt – towards the head of the table – where it was considered to be an honour.

The illustration is a Pilgrim Fathers’ artefact. The original standing salt dish was tin-glazed earthenware. Made in the London area between 1640 and 1700, it descended in the family of the Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller.
